I’m pulling for Texas today because I can’t suffer anymore of the Big 10 crowing about being the best conference. One game won’t change the narrative of the last 3 seasons, but if both Texas and Oklahoma can’t beat the Big 10’s two biggest brands, it will be at least a little of a counterpoint to the conference supremacy narrative.

We are spoiled by all the sudden success, and I can’t help but wonder if we’ve all become a little blasé about “just” winning 10-12 games a year and even the SEC Championship?

Since UGA’s true rise to national prominence in the 1940s, the Dawgs had won SEC Championships in each decade of the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, including National Championships in 1942 and 1980. By the time I was a freshman on campus in 1989, we were only 8-9 years removed from the most recent National Championship and just 5-6 years from our most recent SEC Championship.

Everyday, I walked by the “large” Sanford Stadium scoreboard, which was back facing Sanford Drive. Back then, it was smaller, and “yellowish” bulbs gave fans inside the stadium the score and not much else. On the backside facing the bridge, in the center of a large, black backdrop, were sizable white letters saying “National Champions 1980” and underneath, all ten SEC Championships were listed in a little smaller text.

To me, walking by each day was like facing the flag each morning in grade school and saying the Pledge. Something to memorize and take pride in. But that old sign disappeared in the first renovation of Sanford Stadium that “bowled in” the lower deck section of the West end zone. I often wondered if the lack of new titles to add prompted the decision to remove the writing. Time mocked fans as the record gap between moments of glory continued growing.

Even worse, the SEC Championship game was created in 1992 and for the first ten years, Georgia failed to reach the game, but watched as arch-rival, Florida seemingly represented the East nearly every year. By the time Georgia booked its first ticket to the game in 2002 by beating Auburn on 4th down, in the fourth quarter on the Plains, no Georgia fan was complaining that they would only play for the SEC title and not the National Championship. When Michael Johnson caught the touchdown just sealing UGA’s place in the game, the explosion of joy in Bulldog Nation at its most palpable since the early 80s.

After 20 years with no titles, Georgia won 6 SEC titles and 2 National Championships in the 23 seasons since 2002. This success has propelled UGA to the top of the college football world where it’s frequently cited as one of the sport’s preeminent programs, following years of frequently being labeled the team that failed to deliver on its potential. Last year, Georgia fans even openly questioned whether the once coveted spot in the SEC Championship Game was actually a curse, holding UGA back from its higher goal of winning the National Championship.

I often think of that old scoreboard and what all the new titles would look like in the old white stenciling on the black background. We have banners in the stadium for each title, but they are only there on Game Days and I had a real fondness for the old sign and its more in-your-face bravado.

A third straight SEC Championship this season would give us 17 overall and tie us with Alabama as the only teams to have 2 different stints of 3 or more SEC Championships in a row. 17 seems like a much bigger gap to Tennessee and LSU behind us with 13 and 12 respectively. 17 would mean that we have more SEC Championships than Florida and Auburn combined.

Come on, that makes you smile just thinking about it. Imagine dropping that little fact nugget on some unsuspecting orange and blue-clad fan/friend/family member at just the right moment the next time you’re gathered with them and others who can witness your glorious mic drop.

SEC Championships still matter and I’m hoping we win another this year!

The Georgia Bulldogs will take the field on Saturday, September 5th, against the Tennessee State Tigers.

This will be the first-ever matchup between Georgia and Tennessee State.

While the game may not be highly competitive, we’re all excited to see the Bulldogs on the field for the first time this season.

We’re hoping for stellar performances from returning starters like Gunner Stockton and Lawson Lucky. We may have the best and one of the most experienced offensive lines in the country, and hopefully, they will show no mercy and shove around a team that doesn’t have the players to compete with Georgia.

Whose catching passes might be the biggest area of interest and concern for Bulldog fans this year. The wide receiver group could be inconsistent despite available talent, but most feel Georgia’s biggest difficulty will be getting all our tight ends on the field and touching the ball enough to be happy and make a difference on the scoreboard.

Are the Dawgs poised to be title contenders in 2026? Are they competing for the SEC, National Championship, or both? Is winning one or both of those the minimum requirement for this season? What defines a successful season at this point for the Georgia Bulldogs?

The first of 12 regular-season games kicks off on Saturday at 3 p.m. This game won’t provide too many answers, but it hopefully will be fun, if a bit hot…

Indiana won the National Championship for the 2025 season, and everybody is falling all over themselves to talk about what a great story it is for college football. Many have declared that Hollywood couldn’t write a better ending to the season…

I disagree.

I do think Indiana was the best team in college football last year, and I think they more than earned the championship by winning the Big 10 and the College Football Playoff. But I don’t think it is a Hollywood story.

When Boise State beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl on a schoolyard play, and their star running back dropped to a knee and proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on the sideline, that was the greatest storybook ending to a football game and season.

But I’m not arguing storylines and the significance of games here. I’m arguing that Indiana is not a have-not in college football; they have been a care-not. Indiana never tried to be good at football, and they got predictable results. They are not the little engine that could; they are the little engine that didn’t care.

And even now, as they have ascended to the pinnacle of the sport, they were not trying to climb the mountain; they were just rearranging the deck chairs on their own personal Titanic, but came up roses and glory more by accident than anything.

Once I get this little grip off my chest, then we can get back to UGA Athletics and Georgia Football…

Miami has already won the first quarterfinal game, so we know who we will play if we win this game. It will be the seemingly fated match-up with Carson Beck and the Miami Hurricanes.

First, we have to play our second rematch in a row of a regular-season game we’ve already played. This time, we play the Kiffin-less Ole Miss Rebels, who led Georgia by 9 points late in the last match-up.

Hopefully, Georgia controls the game a little more convincingly and sets up the big-time semifinal that many will be excited for and many never wanted to see…

But what a game it was… Georgia finally getting the Alabama elephant all the way off its back! I’m still just smiling several times a day every time I think about it.

And while it sucks to have such a long break in a great season like this when you just wish you could keep the hits coming, it’s kind of fun to sit back and watch others, including some of our rivals and conference mates, go out and play while we relax.

Not to mention, most every game now features upcoming opponents we may have to play to win a 3rd National Championship in the last five years!

Let’s take a look at the games so far and upcoming as we look ahead to Georgia’s path to that possible 2025 National Championship.

This truly feels like breaking through the one last glass ceiling Georgia Football was running into. This is the catharsis we all needed and wanted.

Even I, as I was watching it, felt both at ease that the Dawgs were taking care of business and the sense that it’s not over until it’s over. I didn’t really even panic much when Bama scored to cut it to 21-7. Still felt like Georgia had just controlled this game too much to find any way to lose.

As the game was ending, I just started to have the satisfied grin that you can’t get rid of even when someone tells you that you have it and you think you should be more discreet.

I also thought to myself, “Cole Spear was Frickin’ onside!”

I did not end up going through my traditional three key matchup and three true outcomes to build to my prediction for the game.

By the end, I gave you my thoughts on who I thought would win and how the game will flow. Honestly, we’ve already done the traditional breakdown on this game once, and I really don’t think it’s that much different.

These teams are very close in every important way statistically, with one major internal difference. That being Georgia is better at running the ball and stopping the run. I think that’s why many people seem to be leaning Georgia in this game… me too!

For the 5th straight year and 8 of the last 9 years, Georgia is playing in the SEC Championship Game. Back in the 90s, I used to wonder if we were ever going to play in at least 1 of these games…

This time we get extra motivation in the form of redemption if we can Beat Bama! We’ve lost 10 of 11 to the Tide, but nothing can make that feeling any better than celebrating on the field in front of them and their fans, winning the SEC, and building huge momentum heading into the playoffs!

I’m ready! How ‘bout you? How ‘bout them Dawgs?

Time for the 117th edition of “Clean Old Fashioned Hate,” where the Bulldogs take on the Bees from the North Avenue Trade School.

Georgia is nearly a 2-touchdown favorite, but Georgia Tech is ranked in the Top 25 and is having one of its best seasons in recent memory. Last year, they pushed Georgia to the edge with an 8-overtime all-time classic game.

But can they do it again, or is Georgia still too strong for the upset? Georgia is peaking, and Tech is suddenly struggling, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything in a hate match like this…

Let’s break down and predict the winner… Should be the Dawgs, right?

We have a special week and a special game this year, although the bees are doing their best to try to ruin the whole thing. Three weeks ago, we were looking at a potential top 10 match-up of undefeated teams squaring off with playoff implications on the line.

Now Tech has lost 2 of 3, one to a bad NC State team, and the luster or shine has come off the game a little bit. It’s still at least an AP Top 25 matchup between #4 and #23, so that’s a lot better than recent years.

Lots to talk about this week with the last game of the regular season and the big rival game on hand.

We’ve heard Kirby say over and over that he wants Georgia to be the best-conditioned team on the field so that they can own the 4th quarter. To that end, Georgia has outscored opponents 80-34 in the 4th quarter this season after beating Texas 21-0 in the 4th. Further, 21 of those 34 opponents’ 4th quarter points were garbage time TDs against Georgia bench players after the game was no longer in doubt.

That means opponents have only scored 13 total points in the 4th quarter this season with the game on the line!

That and so much more to gloat over today…

We have so much to talk about in this recap of the Georgia-Texas game that I’m breaking this podcast up into 2 parts. This one ends with me unceremoniously saying, “We are going to take a break…” I pick back up the thread of the same conversation though from the beginning of Episode 47 Part 2.

What a great game by the Dawgs and an even more brilliant effort by CKS or Head Coach Kirby Smart! He just pulled at the right strings in this game! It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!

But when you look closely, they haven’t really done much to earn that #10 ranking. They have won four in a row since losing to Florida, but they needed overtime to escape Kentucky and Mississippi State, and they let Vandy run up and down the field and put the scare of a 3-point game into what should have been a comfortable win at home for Texas.

This team on paper is not the elite defense or overly improved offense we’ve been told about, and those flaws are probably going to be exposed under red lights tonight in Sanford Stadium.

Texas is a great program, maybe even slightly better than Georgia historically. Maybe not. But Texas has been the butt of many jokes over the last 10-15 years as they have tried to get “back” to the elite of the sport.

They last reached these heights in the 2009 season when they played in and lost the BCS National Championship game. But coach Sark has them back, losing in the playoffs the last 2 seasons, and that’s the first step toward actually winning a national championship, not losing it necessarily, but being able to make the game.

Can they overcome a shaky start to the season and be a playoff contender this year? First, they have to play the Dawgs between the Hedges!

What is the ceiling and what is the floor for this team relative to the playoff? What does last year’s playoff tell us about this year? Where do we want to be? Is 5th and just outside the SEC Championship game perhaps just the right spot?

It’s what Georgia has earned on the field, so it’s the right spot in that regard, but is it a good position to be in for the Dawgs? I think it is, actually.

I don’t really like the 12-team playoff. I was fine with 4 teams. Exclusive enough to keep the tension in every game of the regular season for contenders, but a little more forgiving and encompassing than the old “bowl n poll” system.

Today, while discussing this year’s playoff, I share what I would do if I had the magic wand to wave and fix all the problems.

This team seems to be improving. And while the Mississippi State Bulldogs are not an elite team, I think this game still shows real growth for this team as the season has progressed. The defense is becoming more reliable. The offense continues to be productive and added more explosiveness this week.
