It’s amazing how long an off-week feels following a loss. I always hope we win every game, but I especially prefer winning before off-weeks so the whole 2 weeks are just aglow with a bright future.

Coming off such a disappointing loss to Auburn, at first I was happy to have a break; now it just feels like a long time to wear the mantle of a team that lost.

I hope the team feels the same way and comes out sharp as razors, ready to slice through the Gators. I mention in this episode that it’s good to remember that Georgia under Kirby always seems to have at least one game a year when people start to talk dismissively about Georgia and doubt creeps into the fanbase, and the Dawgs show up on the field and just destroy the opponent.

The example that popped to mind during recording was the 2023 Ole Miss game in Athens. People were questioning UGA some, and Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss were hot and came into Athens ranked #9. The Rebels were a trendy pick to upset Georgia and maybe get into the title discussion.

Georgia won the game 52-17 and even Lane Kiffin could only say they got their butts kicked.

I’m not confident this is that game for Georgia, but I think Georgia wins by double digits, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t Georgia’s best game of the year.

Either way, It’s great to be a Gator Hater!

The series stands at 58–44–2, favoring UGA by 14 games. Yet UGA held a peak lead of 22 games during my freshman year at UGA. I have seen Florida trim the margin to just 7 games twice, as recently as 2016. Although we have won 11 of the last 15, more success is needed to restore the series to its late-1980s state.

That is the strength of history: we add to it daily. As history grows, the narrative shifts. From 1990 to 2010, Florida lived rent-free anywhere it wanted in DawgNation. Historically, however, Georgia controls the series with Florida, including stretches from the early 1900s to the 1940s, again in the 1970s and ’80s, and now across the past 15 years.

This year brings added intensity because both teams rank in the Top 25 for the first time in 6 seasons and only the 24th time in series history.

Should be fun!

Florida appears to be a rising program, and after Georgia’s unexpected loss to Auburn last week, you might feel the familiar unease that used to settle in every Bulldog’s stomach as the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party approached.

Even so, missing the playoffs, regardless of a loss to Florida seems unlikely because the 12-team playoff that will soon expand to 24 teams.

During the ’90s, Florida served as the gatekeeper to the SEC Championship from the Eastern Division. Florida blocked Georgia from that game many times, and nothing significant could occur without reaching and winning it.

Now Georgia fans are unsure they even want to play in the soon-to-be-defunct SEC Championship Game. National championships are the priority, and qualifying for the field allows a run, as 2024 Ohio State demonstrated.

The stakes may have shifted, but Florida is raising the pressure anyway.

Before shifting focus entirely to Florida, we should review the Auburn game once more to determine whether that loss was a one-off or a sign of concern.

It was cold, and sometimes each team created bitter despair for the other by handing them the loss that kept them from glory. They may not have won the SEC, but at least their rival wasn’t going to win either.

The series is one of the longest-running in the nation: 134 years old, 130 games played. As recently as 2014 it was tied at 55-55-8 after 118 meetings. Only 1 point separated the teams after 104 meetings in 2000.

I was at the 1996 game at Auburn when the Tigers tried to run for the game-winning touchdown with about 22 seconds and no timeouts. The ball came loose; there was confusion. Auburn had the ball and tried to line up and try again. Georgia players were in no hurry. The clock hit zero, and the game ended. Auburn people were livid and crying foul. Georgia people just grinned and took it all in.

Nothing is quite as satisfying as beating a bitter rival. Sometimes you almost wish it’s close just to tease them, but then you remember a good butt-kicking is good too.

Auburn has lost 9 in a row in the series and fallen 10 games behind in the long-standing record books. This doesn’t look like the Auburn team to turn things around, and this doesn’t look like the Georgia team to try to break a streak against.

Sometimes crazy things happen in these types of games, but I hope not today…

What’s the most egregious blown call of all time? Recency bias says the latest blown call in a big game is the worst you’ve ever seen. Was it PI? Yes, looks like it. Had the call been made, would it have changed the outcome of the game? Very uncertain.

Does Georgia get an asterisk on this game? Did Bama get an asterisk for the 2017 National Championship since Tyler Simmons was, say it with me, “ON SIDE!” No. Everybody legitimately recognizes that Tide Team as National Champion.

Tyler Simmons doesn’t justify KJ Bolden, but it does provide context. Close, hard-fought games between equally matched teams magnify the calls that are made or not made throughout the game. There were 121 plays in Saturday’s game. Each contributed to the ultimate outcome, but no one play won or lost the game because the next play is determined by the play before it. It’s too hard to unwind the thousands, if not millions, of outcomes that could unfold by changing one play here or there in a game.

Georgia fans have scoured the slow-motion footage and found holds not called, personal fouls not called, and other violations. The main difference between those and the plays we are all talking about today is that Georgia won the game and those plays were not highlighted by national tv broadcast. Had Georgia lost, the significance of the missed calls in their favor would be more meaningful, like in 2018.

Only the losing team takes to the podium to say they were robbed. Most of the blown calls In the Georgia-Alabama series prior to Saturday seem to be in favor of Alabama, and Georgia was the team crying foul. That’s because UGA lost most of those games. Today, Alabama fans are aggrieved because they lost on Saturday.

In some ways, I suspect many Georgia fans are just as happy to see the shoe on the other foot as they were to cheer the win.

This marks the fifth occasion they have played on campus since 2020, including the third game in Tuscaloosa.

When UGA last visited Alabama, the sport produced an instant classic. Alabama surged to a 28–0 lead right away. Georgia rallied through the remainder of the contest, seizing a 34–33 advantage with 2:31 left. Bama then overcame Georgia with a 75-yard touchdown on the next offensive play, having scored only five points since early in the second quarter.

This matchup carries the potential for a similar event. Both teams enter at 5–0 and rank within the top six. Each side features high-output offenses ranked first and second in points scored, alongside talented and aggressive defenses.

Neither team has faced an opponent of comparable caliber. Both will be tested by the end of the night, but only one will remain undefeated. Yet will it matter beyond bragging rights? Probably not. Both are expected to be favored in most, if not all, remaining games, and both are likely to meet again in the SEC Championship Game or qualify for the twelve-team College Football Playoff field.

Still, bragging rights are good!

Most Alabama fans, if they are baseball fans, are also probably Braves fans. I am a huge fan of both the Braves and Georgia.

My first and oldest sports fan memories are of going to Atlanta Fulton County Stadium when I was five to watch the Braves play. Among the memorabilia in my office is a shadow box with my first baseball cap, which I believe was purchased at my first-ever Braves game, which I believe was also my first-ever live sporting event.

Actually, just today, my father asked me if I remember seeing Hank Aaron play? He asked, not remembering himself whether we went to see the Braves play with Hank Aaron still among the players on the field.

I have no memory of seeing Aaron play. I’m pretty sure that my first game was in 1976. Hank still played that year, but for Milwaukee, not the Braves. I feel like if I had seen him play, I would know that…

I do know that I have witnessed, as a Georgia fan, 19 meetings of UGA vs. Alabama in 40 seasons of Georgia Football. Georgia is just 6 and 13 in those match ups. The worst record against any team during those 40 years.

The first 8 were played between 1990 and 2008 and were all regular-season, home-and-away matchups. Georgia was 4–4 in those games. That was just 8 matchups in 18 seasons. My wife, a Bama grad and former recruiter for the Tide, and I were married 7 years before the teams played for the first time.

In the 11 games since 2012, 7 of the contests were neutral-site games for either the SEC Championship or the National Championship. Georgia is 1-4 in SEC Championships against the Tide and 1-1 in National Championship matchups. 0-4 in the other regular-season contests.

This week, Georgia faces Alabama for the first scheduled meeting of the year. The 2 teams could easily end up in the worst-case scenario of playing each other three times this season.

This game will likely settle nothing. Nothing but bragging rights. For the rare moment Georgia has that on the Tide, having beaten them thoroughly for the SEC Championship last year in the second meeting, 28-7.

This game seems more likely to look like the game the last time the two played in Tuscaloosa, with Alabama winning 41-34.

Maybe we can all at least enjoy a group “Chop” if the Braves can find enough hitting to beat the Dodgers and advance to the NCLS for the first time since the last time the Braves beat the Dodgers in a postseason series, in 2021 when they beat the Dodgers to advance to the World Series.

Georgia has 20 yards rushing at the half, and yet somehow, that’s not really the issue in a disappointing first half that sees Georgia only up 21-14 on a Vandy team playing with a backup QB.

Gunner has made excellent throws under pressure and wide open. He’s layered the ball short and perfectly hit the deep ball. Other than one wasted possession from midfield, the offense has mostly done its job.

The defense has been shockingly bad on key 3rd and long plays. They have lost contain on the Vandy QB and left their two best wide receivers so open that Georgia is lucky to have only given up 1 long touchdown. They’ve shown some pressure, but have yet to get home and have let the QB get away for positive gains over and over again.

Nothing about this makes me feel like playing Keelon Russell next week will be a pleasant experience…

Vanderbilt is in Athens to serve as the Homecoming opponent as they have many times before. This is not the bottom of the SEC Vanderbilt of years before, but it’s also not the Diego Pavia’s Vanderbilt of the 2024-2025 seasons.

Jared Curtis, one-time UGA commit and former 5-star prospect, leads Vandy at QB and is playing well and showing lots of athleticism, but not enough to carry the team on his back quite like his predecessor.

Georgia is a more than 25-point favorite, and we expect covering the line to be well within reach. A bigger concern might be just continuing the offensive efficiency Georgia has displayed in all but the 3rd quarter of last week’s game against Oklahoma.

For UGA fans who are also Braves fans, the butterflies in the belly are only likely to come on just after the Georgia game, around 4pm when first pitch in the NDLS is thrown and the Braves take on the Dodgers in LA.

The Dodgers will be heavily favored in the series and to win the World Series, but the Braves have beaten the Dodgers 5 of 6 times this season and beat the Dodgers the last time they faced each other in the postseason, which was in the 2021 NLCS.

The SEC and the Top 25 have a few interesting games to keep an eye on this weekend, including Ohio State facing a second big test on the road at Iowa and Alabama visiting suddenly scary Mississippi State. If Bama wins, GameDay may be visiting Tuscaloosa when UGA comes to town next week for a potential Top 7 - Top 5 matchup.

The College Football Playoff leadership is meeting with ESPN to find the money it will take to finally kill off the last bit of drama left in the regular season by trying to expand the Playoff to 24 teams.

There were several busts. Their TE Beers keeps being open for 8-12 yard plays. Mateer has had more time than he probably thinks he has. Kirby said we are not getting enough pressure, and they are giving us mistakes.

It’s true that Mateer has been loose with the ball. On the play that led to the 85-yard Chris Cole TD fumble return, Mateer just loses the ball. He sees a player breaking wide open in the end zone and he tries to double pump to get the ball there. Then he just loses the ball. Now Chris Cole was right in his face and had his long arms out and up, so Mateer, I believe, is trying to make a last-minute adjustment on the throw, but it did look pretty weak.

Georgia is leading 28-0 at the half, but has only outgained OK 150-140. That said, the Dawgs do have 3 turnovers on defense and 136 return yards with a touchdown. Talk about hidden yardage!

Gunner update - with another half down, Gunner has still thrown more TDs than incompletions, 10 to 9. Gunner was 10 of 12 for 103 yards and 1 TD in the half. Bowens now is responsible for 6 TDs on the season.

I think we can agree that featuring and keeping a hold on Tayln Taylor in favor of focusing on other portal WRs makes a lot of sense. He’s having his bust-out game with 3 catches for 69 yards and a TD, and memories of the dropped pass against Alabama last year are starting to just feel like the inevitable growing pains you go through to develop players.

The offense remains efficient and looks really sharp against an actual elite defense. The Dawgs are averaging 6.25 yards per play at the half, but had been averaging more than 7 yards per play when leading 21-0. The last drive only covering 11 yards for the touchdown added to the score but dropped the average.

The level of competition so far has been too weak to draw any meaningful conclusions.

Arkansas may prove to be one of the worst teams in the SEC, but you could tell watching the game, they have much more talent than UGA’s first two opponents. Arthur Marshall is a legitimate threat at wide receiver. KJ Jackson showed he has talent and flashed moments of great quarterback play.

Overall, Arkansas has a long way to go and the fans are clearly not convinced coach Ryan Silverfield or the current batch of Hogs have the answers. The stadium was never more than 2/3s or 3/4s full and the crowd quickly ebbed from the high water mark. By the second half, many fans donned paper bags on their heads as called for on socials.

Georgia played well, but left offensive points on the field while bequeathing extra points to Arkansas on defense. Gunner could have left the game after leading the Dawgs to a 31-3 lead early in the 4th Quarter, but he returned for the 8th drive of the game for Georgia, and led a 1-play 61-yard drive on a pass to Dandridge to put the Dawgs up 38-3 with 12:42 to go. Had he not come in for that one play, he would have finished his day with under 100 yards passing, but nearly 100 on the ground.

Gunner finished with 147 yards passing and 97 rushing with one passing touchdown. On the season, Stockton has 9 TD passes and 7 incompletions. The Bulldogs have scored 178 points, the most they’ve scored in the 1st 3 games of the season in the AP Poll era. The defense has yielded 28 of 40 total points allowed on the season in the 4th quarters of the last 2 games, only allowing 12 total points in the other 10 quarters of football so far.

3 games in, the Dawgs are performing across the board at a much higher level than last year’s 12-2 SEC Champions. They are winning games 59.3 to 13.3 or by 46 points a game. Sure, you can’t say beating bad teams is the mark of a champion, but last year’s team lacked explosive plays and firepower. They were not very good at creating havoc on defense. This year, the Dawgs have 8 sacks, twice as many as this point last year, and 21 tackles for loss compared to just 14 last year. On offense, UGA is averaging more than 6 more plays a game of 10 yards or more. Stockton had both a pass and a run of more than 60 yards.

By this time next week, we will know how Georgia can perform against a top 25 team. But for now, we have enough data to say the Dawgs are more explosive on offense and creating more havoc on defense. That’s enough to be encouraging that this team may have a higher ceiling than last year’s SEC Champions, a playoff top 4 seed.

Solid first half, if not very spectacular. In many ways, this is the first real game of the season, and the Dawgs look a little like they are playing their first game.

Some mistakes on pressures and sacks given up. Some holes in the secondary when the pass rush hasn’t created big pressure.

Biggest play, a quarterback sweep. Designed play, well blocked, and executed. Fraser running mean. Bowes solid. Phillips a couple of good runs. 164 yards rushing in the first half and about 18-20 yards lost on sacks, so gross yards close to 200 in the run game in the first half.

Not a lot from the passing game yet, but hasn’t been needed. Nice to see Lucky with the big catch.

Arkansas with 146 yards in the first half. 67 on the last drive. Georgia doing a good job creating loss yardage plays after big gains by Arkansas.

Would like to see better pass protection, better pass offense, and better pass rush.

I think those new white unis would look spectacular in the sparkling bright sun we’ve had recently, but that may not be what we get. Fingers crossed.

Last week, there was only 1 matchup between Top 25 teams, and most every ranked team won big. Winning dramatically is not winning big, Michigan…

I’m pulling for Texas today because I can’t suffer anymore of the Big 10 crowing about being the best conference. One game won’t change the narrative of the last 3 seasons, but if both Texas and Oklahoma can’t beat the Big 10’s two biggest brands, it will be at least a little of a counterpoint to the conference supremacy narrative.

The last 3 seasons, which ended in losses in the SEC Championship and CFB Playoffs, landed like a failed punchline from your favorite comedian.

We are spoiled by all the sudden success, and I can’t help but wonder if we’ve all become a little blasé about “just” winning 10-12 games a year and even the SEC Championship?

Since UGA’s true rise to national prominence in the 1940s, the Dawgs had won SEC Championships in each decade of the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, including National Championships in 1942 and 1980. By the time I was a freshman on campus in 1989, we were only 8-9 years removed from the most recent National Championship and just 5-6 years from our most recent SEC Championship.

Everyday, I walked by the “large” Sanford Stadium scoreboard, which was back facing Sanford Drive. Back then, it was smaller, and “yellowish” bulbs gave fans inside the stadium the score and not much else. On the backside facing the bridge, in the center of a large, black backdrop, were sizable white letters saying “National Champions 1980” and underneath, all ten SEC Championships were listed in a little smaller text.

To me, walking by each day was like facing the flag each morning in grade school and saying the Pledge. Something to memorize and take pride in. But that old sign disappeared in the first renovation of Sanford Stadium that “bowled in” the lower deck section of the West end zone. I often wondered if the lack of new titles to add prompted the decision to remove the writing. Time mocked fans as the record gap between moments of glory continued growing.

Even worse, the SEC Championship game was created in 1992 and for the first ten years, Georgia failed to reach the game, but watched as arch-rival, Florida seemingly represented the East nearly every year. By the time Georgia booked its first ticket to the game in 2002 by beating Auburn on 4th down, in the fourth quarter on the Plains, no Georgia fan was complaining that they would only play for the SEC title and not the National Championship. When Michael Johnson caught the touchdown just sealing UGA’s place in the game, the explosion of joy in Bulldog Nation at its most palpable since the early 80s.

After 20 years with no titles, Georgia won 6 SEC titles and 2 National Championships in the 23 seasons since 2002. This success has propelled UGA to the top of the college football world where it’s frequently cited as one of the sport’s preeminent programs, following years of frequently being labeled the team that failed to deliver on its potential. Last year, Georgia fans even openly questioned whether the once coveted spot in the SEC Championship Game was actually a curse, holding UGA back from its higher goal of winning the National Championship.

I often think of that old scoreboard and what all the new titles would look like in the old white stenciling on the black background. We have banners in the stadium for each title, but they are only there on Game Days and I had a real fondness for the old sign and its more in-your-face bravado.

A third straight SEC Championship this season would give us 17 overall and tie us with Alabama as the only teams to have 2 different stints of 3 or more SEC Championships in a row. 17 seems like a much bigger gap to Tennessee and LSU behind us with 13 and 12 respectively. 17 would mean that we have more SEC Championships than Florida and Auburn combined.

Come on, that makes you smile just thinking about it. Imagine dropping that little fact nugget on some unsuspecting orange and blue-clad fan/friend/family member at just the right moment the next time you’re gathered with them and others who can witness your glorious mic drop.

SEC Championships still matter and I’m hoping we win another this year!

Week 0 kicked off last week, and Week 1 is underway, having begun with a thrilling Thursday night game. Georgia Tech hosted Colorado at Bobby Dodd Stadium and largely had the national stage all to themselves. They, however, lost and lost much of the momentum they gained from opening wins in the recent seasons.

The Georgia Bulldogs will take the field on Saturday, September 5th, against the Tennessee State Tigers.

This will be the first-ever matchup between Georgia and Tennessee State.

While the game may not be highly competitive, we’re all excited to see the Bulldogs on the field for the first time this season.

We’re hoping for stellar performances from returning starters like Gunner Stockton and Lawson Lucky. We may have the best and one of the most experienced offensive lines in the country, and hopefully, they will show no mercy and shove around a team that doesn’t have the players to compete with Georgia.

Whose catching passes might be the biggest area of interest and concern for Bulldog fans this year. The wide receiver group could be inconsistent despite available talent, but most feel Georgia’s biggest difficulty will be getting all our tight ends on the field and touching the ball enough to be happy and make a difference on the scoreboard.

Are the Dawgs poised to be title contenders in 2026? Are they competing for the SEC, National Championship, or both? Is winning one or both of those the minimum requirement for this season? What defines a successful season at this point for the Georgia Bulldogs?

The first of 12 regular-season games kicks off on Saturday at 3 p.m. This game won’t provide too many answers, but it hopefully will be fun, if a bit hot…

Indiana won the National Championship for the 2025 season, and everybody is falling all over themselves to talk about what a great story it is for college football. Many have declared that Hollywood couldn’t write a better ending to the season…

I disagree.

I do think Indiana was the best team in college football last year, and I think they more than earned the championship by winning the Big 10 and the College Football Playoff. But I don’t think it is a Hollywood story.

When Boise State beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl on a schoolyard play, and their star running back dropped to a knee and proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on the sideline, that was the greatest storybook ending to a football game and season.

But I’m not arguing storylines and the significance of games here. I’m arguing that Indiana is not a have-not in college football; they have been a care-not. Indiana never tried to be good at football, and they got predictable results. They are not the little engine that could; they are the little engine that didn’t care.

And even now, as they have ascended to the pinnacle of the sport, they were not trying to climb the mountain; they were just rearranging the deck chairs on their own personal Titanic, but came up roses and glory more by accident than anything.

Once I get this little grip off my chest, then we can get back to UGA Athletics and Georgia Football…

Hopefully, this year, the layoff curse is not a problem.

Miami has already won the first quarterfinal game, so we know who we will play if we win this game. It will be the seemingly fated match-up with Carson Beck and the Miami Hurricanes.

First, we have to play our second rematch in a row of a regular-season game we’ve already played. This time, we play the Kiffin-less Ole Miss Rebels, who led Georgia by 9 points late in the last match-up.

Hopefully, Georgia controls the game a little more convincingly and sets up the big-time semifinal that many will be excited for and many never wanted to see…

But what a game it was… Georgia finally getting the Alabama elephant all the way off its back! I’m still just smiling several times a day every time I think about it.

And while it sucks to have such a long break in a great season like this when you just wish you could keep the hits coming, it’s kind of fun to sit back and watch others, including some of our rivals and conference mates, go out and play while we relax.

Not to mention, most every game now features upcoming opponents we may have to play to win a 3rd National Championship in the last five years!

Let’s take a look at the games so far and upcoming as we look ahead to Georgia’s path to that possible 2025 National Championship.

This truly feels like breaking through the one last glass ceiling Georgia Football was running into. This is the catharsis we all needed and wanted.

Even I, as I was watching it, felt both at ease that the Dawgs were taking care of business and the sense that it’s not over until it’s over. I didn’t really even panic much when Bama scored to cut it to 21-7. Still felt like Georgia had just controlled this game too much to find any way to lose.

As the game was ending, I just started to have the satisfied grin that you can’t get rid of even when someone tells you that you have it and you think you should be more discreet.

I also thought to myself, “Cole Spear was Frickin’ onside!”
