It took a long time to get a feel for this game. Texas is an enigma. They were pre-season #1 in the country with Heisman hype for quarterback Arch Manning. But by mid-October, they were out of the top 25. Now, just 4 weeks later, they are back to #10 in the country and would be in the playoffs if they started today.
But when you look closely, they haven’t really done much to earn that #10 ranking. They have won four in a row since losing to Florida, but they needed overtime to escape Kentucky and Mississippi State, and they let Vandy run up and down the field and put the scare of a 3-point game into what should have been a comfortable win at home for Texas.
This team on paper is not the elite defense or overly improved offense we’ve been told about, and those flaws are probably going to be exposed under red lights tonight in Sanford Stadium.
